United States Representatives Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona and Bruce Braley of Iowa both issued a public statement addressing the importance of promoting and improving patient safety. Representative Kirkpatrick highlighted organizations within her district, including Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. that focus on patient safety initiatives. Representative Braley recognized the specific importance of actively eliminating patient identification errors and cross contamination in today's medical laboratories.

The statements were published in the March 6, 2014 and April 13, 2011 editions of the Congressional Record, the official record of proceedings and debates of the United States Congress. The 2014 statement was delivered to recognize Patient Safety Awareness Week and the work of the National Patient Safety Foundation. The 2011 statement recognizes the critical role that medical laboratorians play in the healthcare industry, and honors their work during National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Representative Braley issued the statement on behalf of his Congressional colleague, Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.
